Aconcagua: King & Team Rest at Base Camp

There's not much to report today. The team enjoyed a calm and warm rest day at base camp. Without much to sort or pack everyone occupied their time relaxing, reading, and hanging out in one of the large dome tents. Some laundry was washed and showers were enjoyed but really we are all eager to head up to Camp 1 and get the climb started. RMI Guide Mike King

Aconcagua: King & Team Carry Gear to Camp 1

Today was our first day climbing this huge mountain, up till now it's been a luxurious trek. We carried up a cache of food, fuel and a few personal items to our Camp One at 16,400'. The terrain is scree for as far as the eyes can see along an ancient glacial moraine, monotonous at times but beautiful in it's own right. The Team had been picking the brains of groups in camp about what to expect and once we were back all agreed that it was a tough day, then again the first day with heavy packs above 14,000' is always tough. We are all back in camp and will enjoy a good dinner followed by a rest day tomorrow. We'll keep our fingers crossed for clear skies and decreasing winds. RMI Guide Mike King

Aconcagua: King & Team Rest Day at Base Camp

The Team took advantage of a quiet camp last night and got some good rest and woke energized. We spent the day packing and sorting gear, eating pizza and laughing at funny stories. All in all a very casual day here at Plaza Argentina. Tomorrow the plan is to carry a load up to Camp 1 and then return to base camp. Aconcagua: King & Team at Plaza Argentina

After an early wake up call the Team enjoyed clear views of Aconcagua on a beautiful day to finish the hike to our base camp, Plaza Argentina. We hiked through the scenic Relinchos River Valley while our bodies continued the acclimatization process. Base camp is situated on a large glacial moraine that is covered in scree. The Team is resting after setting up camp and everyone is looking forward to rest day tomorrow. With all the comforts of home except a comfy bed, we'll sort some gear and food, knock the dust off with a shower and take in the stellar views this place has to offer...rough life. Aconcagua: King & Team Arrive at Trek Camp 2

After a calm night under the stars the Team woke and began breaking camp. We had approximately nine miles to cover, mostly rolling terrain and the Vacas Valley continues to widen. Today was a little cooler then yesterday but honestly the song remained the same. This camp isn't remarkable except for the old stone building built into a giant erratic boulder, which is the namesake. Everyone is trying to beat the heat, some in their tents and some down by the river. We got to see Aconcagua for the first time and there is a lot of snow up high. Tomorrow we will arrive at Aconcagua Base Camp, there the climb begins in earnest. RMI Guide Mike King

Aconcagua: King & Team Enter National Park, Arrive at First Camp

We spent the day walking up the Vacas Valley, the terrain is rocky and filled with various shades of red, brown and greens. Due to heavy snow fall up high and the rain showers lower down the happy desert plants are blooming with yellows and purples. The Team is doing great despite some really hot sections today. We'll spend the remainder of the afternoon relaxing in the cool breeze, watching a fox inquire about camp and eat the most amazing Argentinean asado (BBQ for those who don't speak Spanish). The meat and cooking display by the Mule Drivers has become legendary. Guides wax poetic about the "scent of Leñas" that fills your clothing for days, weeks or even years to come. Ruth Chris doesn't even compare to the quality of steak cooked and served near the soot stained brick building...muy authentico! Listen to the song "Big Rock Candy Mountain", really listen to the lyrics and you'll only get a glimpse of how sleeping under the stars at Leñas is. Milky Way dust for nights on end. Until tomorrow. Aconcagua: King & Team Arrive in Los Penitentes

The Team is currently relaxing next to a fireplace worthy of GOT in a unique ski lodge in Los Penitentes. There isn't any winter snow here, so the area serves as an outfitting station for climbers getting ready to head into the park. We spent the afternoon packing and sorting gear for the mules. We'll continue sport eating our way through Argentina this evening and have a casual start in the AM. Our trek to base camp is up the Vacas Valley, an arid high desert landscape filled with rocks, shrubs, mules and rich colored soil that resembles a Bob Ross painting. Thanks for following along! Aconcagua: King & Team Ready to Go

The Team is all assembled with bags in tow here in Mendoza. We broke the ice with a meeting that was followed by gear check and permit registration. Since we are here to attempt Aconcagua the team opted for dinner and an early night to get caught up on sleep from the two days travel instead of a night out on the town. Tomorrow we will head to Los Penitentes to pack for mules and the trek into base camp. We have a great group with a varied collection of personalities, experiences and mountains under their belts. Aconcagua: King & Team Arrive Back at Base Camp, Will Have One Last Night on the Trail

The team woke to cold and snowy conditions at High Camp...normal Aconcagua conditions, just not what we experienced this expedition. We had some gear to pick up at our previous camps, but finally got down to base camp for some much earned beverages and a delicious dinner. We will walk to Leñas, our first trek campsite for the infamous asado...Chapstick application is key to enjoying the grilled carne after being in the Alta Montana for the last two weeks. The moon is newer then our trek in so the stars/Milky Way dust will be in full effect, my favorite place to sleep under the stars. This is our final dispatch of the trip, thanks for the comments. Get down to Leñas next climbing season for the best steak this side of the Galaxy and a bid at the highest peak in South America! RMI Guides Mike King, Jess Matthews & Nick Scott

Aconcagua: King & Team Reach the Summit!

Update from Mike King at 10:30 am PT: If you haven't listened to my hypoxic voicemail from today, you should know that we stood on top of Aconcagua, 22,841' around 1pm local time. The climbers are back in camp trying to avoid these late afternoon snow/heat waves...ya doesn't sound fun does it? The climb had wind, snow, heat, drifted snow in the trail and lots of other parties attempting the summit. I'll leave the details from the summit day for your loved ones to tell...but the guides are in agreement, one of the harder days we've had in the mountains. Tomorrow we will start our downward retreat to the thick air of base camp. Summit call transcription: Hey, this is Mike with the RMI Aconcagua Team. We are standing on top of Aconcagua, the highest mountain outside of the Himalaya. The team did well, we had a really cold morning, probably about 25 mph winds in the face for the first several hours. Now we are sitting up here, we could be in jeans shorts and tank tops. The team did well and we're going to hang out here and take some photos. Then we still have to descend. We will call in or send a dispatch once everyone is safe back at camp.
