Mt. Rainier: July 24th Summit!

Our Four Day Summit Climb led by Dave Hahn and our Five Day Summit Climb led by Mike Haugen reached the summit of Mt. Rainier today. The teams reported clear skies with lots of sunshine and very little wind. The teams were able to spend some time on the summit and are now en route to Camp Muir. Congratulations to today's teams!

Mt. Rainier: July 17th Update

RMI Guide Mike Haugen led his team to the Mt. Rainier summit via the Disappointment Cleaver Route this morning with beautiful weather and a slight breeze. The team began their descent at 10:00 a.m. RMI Guide Jason Thompson was leading his team on the Emmons Route on the northside of Mt. Rainier. Due to firm conditions and a cloud cap developing on the mountain, the team had to make the tough, but more importantly, safe decision to turn at 12,500'. They will stay at Camp Schurman tonight and descend the mountain tomorrow.

Mt. Rainier: July 11th Summit!

It is a beautiful day on Mt. Rainier. The Five Day Summit Climb July 7 - 11 led by Eric Frank and the Four Day Summit Climb July 8 - 11 led by Mike Haugen reached the summit of Mt. Rainier today. The teams reached the crater rim around 7:30 a.m. They reported clear skies, great conditions and winds ranging from 0 to none. The Five Day Kautz Climb is descending to Paradise this morning. Their entire team reached the summit of Mt. Rainier yesterday morning. Congratulations to today's summit teams!

The summit climb teams reported 100% to the top today! They climbed into a cap with 25 – 30 mph winds, but otherwise conditions were not too bad according to Lead Guide Mike Haugen. The teams will spend a bit of time on the summit today and head back down to Camp Muir shortly. Congratulations to today’s teams!

Mt. Rainier June 26th SUMMIT!

Mike Haugen and our Four Day Summit Climb Team reached the top of Mt. Rainier today. The team had light winds and precipitation with limited visibility so they were not going to spend very much time on top. They have started their descent to Camp Muir and we expect the team back at Ashford Basecamp this afternoon. Congratulations to today's team!

Mt. Rainier: June 19th Summit!

Our Four Day Summit Climb Teams led by Mark Falender and Solveig Waterfall reached the summit of Mt. Rainier today. The teams reported light winds, few clouds, and very pleasant weather with the sun peaking through every now and then. The teams are now en route back to RMI Basecamp in Ashford. Mike Haugen and the Expedition Skills Seminar team also reached the summit of Mt. Rainier via the Kautz Route and reported similar conditions. They are headed back to their high camp at 10,800' feet and will finish their week of training on the mountain and return to RMI Basecamp tomorrow afternoon. Congratulations to today's teams!

I was part of the 4 day summit climb on June 19 with Mark & Solveig.  What a magical day it was and I feel extremely privileged to have been part of it. Thank you guys so very much for your guidance, expertise and support.  This has truly been one of the greatest challenges of my life and I will cherish it for a long time to come.  I have taken so much away from this experience - the challenges that this mountain presents, especially the Cleaver, had me digging deeper than I ever had to attain success.  Mark, Solveig, Sean, Geoff and Levi - you guys are all rock stars!!  RMI can and should be very proud of you.  I was sad to see the program end.  Hopefully, I will link up again with Mark for a climb up Grand Teton!

Mt. McKinley Expedition: Haugen & Team - Last Dispatch

The last push is always the worst. We woke up at midnight to see the sun almost set. The alpenglow on Denali was spectacular. After a quick breakfast we headed down glacier for a pickup at the airstrip, which had moved even further up the southeast fork of the Kahiltna Glacier. We are forced to travel at night on the glacier because we need the natural snow bridges that provide the path over and around the cravasses to be as frozen and firm as possible. We made the trip in a little over five hours with each team member silently cursing their sleds that usually have a mind of their own on what direction to go and how often they tip over. I have been so impressed by how well this group of guys works together and has meshed as a great team. It is so easy to get overly frustrated with the mountain, your sled, and your rope-mates. Our group managed to take out these frustrations with positive humor, which is a huge reason for our success on the mountain! Within an hour of arriving at the snow airstrip, we heard the growl of the planes coming to pick us up. Thank God for modern communication. We used our satellite phone to make sure that the planes were coming for us. The person from K2 Aviation was concerned that since it was socked in with clouds in Talkeetna, the airstrip would be too socked in to land. She was almost as relieved as we were that there was not a cloud in the sky where we were! As soon as we landed in Talkeetna, we tossed or packs and duffles in the hanger and went for a monster breakfast to power us up for the task of sorting through the heavily used gear and clothing that we had been carrying for the past 21 days. After our post climb chores were completed and some napping took place we enjoyed our celebration of a truly great accomplishment. Summitting the mountain aside, we had a highly successful expedition by all the measures of fun, learning, and camaraderie! RMI Guide Mike Haugen

Mt. McKinley Expedition: Haugen & Team Descending to Basecamp

We are checking in from our descent back to Base camp. We stayed at 11,000' last night and are currently making our way to 7,800'. K2 Aviation has two planes scheduled to pick us up from the airstrip tomorrow morning. Let's hope the weather holds! RMI Guide Mike Haugen
