Mt. Elbrus: Grom & Team Explore the Mountains

All is well here in the Baksan Valley, at the base of Mt. Elbrus. We've settled into our comfortable hotel here in Cheget, which doubles as a ski town in the winter. Picture a lush green valley surrounded by many large snowy mountains! We woke to a beautiful morning and finally we were able to get out and stretch our legs a bit. We made the most of the local ski lifts, (to save our knees of course) and hiked up the neighboring peak to start our acclimatization. It started off a little cloudy today, but eventually cleared for some decent views of Mt. Elbrus. After our ascent we headed back down to town for a nice lunch and headed over to the local climbing shop to pick up a few last minute things. We spent the rest of the afternoon relaxing, getting our bags packed and just wrapped up another enjoyable Russia dinner with some wonderful Georgian soup. All is well here and we'll check in again tomorrow! RMI Guide Casey Grom and crew

Mt. Elbrus: Justman & Team Travel to Saint Petersburg

Our team left the Baksan Valley and the beautiful Caucasus Mountains and hopped a flight to Saint Petersburg. Yes!!! It's a St. Petersburg selfie!! Eat your heart out Ellen! That is the expression you have when you arrive in St. Petersburg. The team had a long day first driving to the airport and then flying to get here. And let me tell you...it is worth it. I love this city and I can't wait to share the sights with the team. It is a luxurious way to end our adventure in Russia. RMI Guide JJ Justman

Mt. Elbrus: Grom and Team Explore Moscow

Hello everyone and welcome to RMI's July 25th Mt. Elbrus trip! After some very long flights the team safely arrived yesterday, we briefly touched base about today's plan before folks retired to catch up on some much needed sleep. Today we had our official team meeting over breakfast at our hotel. It was hard to concentrate while enjoying plenty of fresh bread, cheeses, meats, juice and other delightful things. Once our bellies were full we stumbled out the door to explore the Kremlin and Red Square which is only a short distance away. A few folks visited Lenin's tomb and a few of us wandered around the area enjoying the site. We met our tour guide around 10:30 am and spent much of the day with her visiting St. Basil's Cathedral, the Kremlin, and the Cathedral of Christ the Savior. Our tour guide even took us on a brief tour of the amazing Moscow subway - it has a 194 different stops and most are elaborately decorated and incredibly clean! We did visit the famous Red Square but for unknown reasons it was closed and blocked off today. Afterwards we took a short break where most of us took cat naps to help adjust to the almost 12 hour time change and then headed back out for a quick dinner before calling it a night. Everyone is doing great! RMI Guide Casey Grom and Team

I hope you all have fun!  Kym and Liz, be nice to Casey and have a great and safe trip.  He’s a super guide and a lot of fun.

There were rumors on Twitter last week that the Russian government had decided to close Red Square.

Mt. Elbrus: Justman and Team Reach Summit!

Our team made the summit of Mt. Elbrus! It was an interesting weather day. It wasn't bad but it wasn't good. The wind and the cold challenged everyone including myself. Our team did a fantastic job motivating each other and looking after one another. I was really proud to climb with all of them and they all deserve a huge congratulations! We are now safely down back in the ski town of Cheget. A well deserved rest after a good Russian meal is in store! RMI Guide JJ Justman

Mt. Elbrus: Teams Waits on the Mountain for Better Weather

It is a soggy day on Mount Elbrus. The weather has turned and not for the better. It's raining pretty constant at the moment. What was to be a training day has turned into a hunker down day. Don't get me wrong, I could make it sound like its epic and the team is hanging onto the walls of our huts. However, it's still not too bad. But with the potential of a small break in the weather for tomorrow, there is no need to get sopping wet. The team is reading, watching tv and dreaming of their dance moves on the summit of Elbrus...hopefully tomorrow! So keep your fingers crossed for us... RMI Guides JJ Justman

Mt. Elbrus:  JJ and Team Enjoy Time on the Mountain

Hello from Mt. Elbrus! Our team awoke from a good nights sleep to a beautiful, clear sunny day. After a great Russian breakfast with great American Starbucks coffee we threw our spikes on and went for a walk. The higher you get the slower things become. As our team approached 15,000 feet many of us began to feel the air getting just a bit thinner. However, we accomplished the goal and the high altitude was a great welcome for us to become stronger for summit day. Everyone did a great job and even though towards the end it got a little tougher, everyone is having fun and in good spirits. However, no one is still laughing at any of my jokes! Mt. Elbrus: Justman & Team Acclimate on the Mountain

Hello - We are checking in live from the huts on Mt. Elbrus at a grand altitude of 12,001 feet. We have settled into our cozy home with gear and clothing splayed out all over! The team took a hike up to 13,104 feet today and we returned for a great lunch made by our Executive Chef Masha. I'm not lying when I say we had caviar...we did. We are slowly adjusting to the new altitude. After doing this adventure year after year after year I firmly believe the reason why our teams do so well is our relaxed itinerary. Everyone is doing great and we are soaking in the beautiful mountain views. RMI Guide JJ Justman

Mt. Elbrus: Grom & Team See the Sights and Bid Farewell to Russia

Our final night in St. Petersburg! The team had a great last day here in Russia, with a visit to several beautiful churches full of mosaics. We then visited the very famous Hermitage Museum, where we saw paintings and sculptures by many well-known artists including Picasso, Rembrandt, and even Da Vinci. We took a small break and wrapped up the day with a fantastic evening boat cruise to see this amazing city by water. It's been a wonderful adventure here in Russia, but it's time to say our goodbyes and return to family and loved ones. Thanks for following, RMI Guide Casey Grom and crew
