Level 1
- Easy to moderate hiking and trekking
- Light packs (25 lbs)
- Elevations often below 10,000'
- Easy terrain
Level 2
- Moderate to strenuous trekking and climbing
- May require carrying heavy packs (up to 40 lbs)
- Elevations often above 10,000'
- Moderate terrain
- Nights are spent in huts or tents
- Glacier travel is usually involved
Level 3
- Moderate to strenuous trekking and climbing
- May require carrying heavy packs (up to 50 - 60 lbs)
- Elevations often above 10,000'
- Moderate to intermediate terrain
- Nights are spent in tents or hut
- Glacier travel is usually involved
- May involve travel to remote areas
Level 4
- Strenuous trekking and climbing
- May require carrying heavy packs (up to 60+ lbs)
- Elevations often above 15,000'
- Intermediate to advanced terrain
- Nights are spent in tents
- Extensive glacier travel is usually involved
- Involves travel in remote areas
Level 5
- Strenuous climbing
- May require carrying heavy packs (up to 60 + lbs)
- High or extreme altitudes with elevations often above 20,000'
- Intermediate to advanced terrain
- Nights are spent in tents
- Extensive glacier travel is usually involved
- Involves travel in remote areas
- Long durations
