Aconcagua: Beren & Team Getting Started in Mendoza

Greetings from Mendoza! The entire team has arrived with all bags accounted for and after a siesta, team meeting and feast we are ready to head out tomorrow. When we get up we'll hopefully have a busy day, securing permits and driving to Penitentes to load up our gear for the Mulas and enjoy one last restaurant meal before hitting the trail. Wish us luck for our last bit of off-mountain logistics. It feels great to be one step closer to getting on the hill. RMI Guide Jake Beren

Mt. Shuksan Fisher Chimneys

The final RMI EXPEDITIONS climb of our North Cascade’s season took place under excellent weather & high spirits. The three of us (RMI Guides Jake Beren and Alex Van Steen, with climber Jim Lumberg) enjoyed late season conditions. The chimneys, gullies and summit pyramid didn’t have an ounce of snow in them, making for absolutely fantastic & fun rock scrambling & climbing. On summit morning, we postponed our bid by an hour or two as rain threatened, but by the time we took off the skies were clearing and we enjoyed an improving day and stellar climbing. Mt. Rainier: Muir Expedition Skills Seminar Summit!

The Expedition Skills Seminar - Muir stood on top of Mt. Rainier today! RMI Guide Jake Beren called in at noon to say they were starting their descent back to Camp Muir. The team has been based out of the 10,000' high camp all week learning many mountaineering skills to help them achieve their goal of reaching the Mt. Rainier summit. They have also learned more advanced skills to go on to summit bigger peaks, such as Mt. McKinley in Alaska or Mt. Elbrus in Russia. The seminar team will stay on the mountain tonight and descend to Paradise tomorrow. Congratulations to the summit climbers!

Mt. Rainier: September 2nd Update

RMI Guides Jake Beren and Ty Reid and their summit climb teams tagged the Mt. Rainier summit this morning! The summit was enveloped by a cloud cap, which created only moderate winds and saturated (not precipitating) air. Both teams had began their descent from the crater rim at 7:30 a.m. Congratulations to today's summit climbers!

Mt. Rainier: August 28th Update

The Four Day Summit climb August 25 - 28 led by RMI Guide Jake Beren and the Expedition Skills Seminar - Paradise led by Pete Van Deventer were unable to reach the summit of Mt. Rainier today due to high winds. The teams waited at Camp Muir for a break in the weather and eventually started out on their summit attempt. Consistent high winds with gusts up to 60 mph turned the teams around at Cathedral Gap. The teams will start their descent from Camp Muir at approximately 8:30 am. The Expeditions Skills Seminar will continue their training at Rainier BaseCamp before concluding their week long adventure later this afternoon. We look forward to seeing the teams at BaseCamp this afternoon.

I’ve been to Mordor (Tolkein modeled Mordor from Bloemfontein, South Africa, apparently), and this was worse.

Posted by: Suman on 9/13/2012 at 5:55 pm

The Camp Muir telemetry shows gusts to 80mph, but who is measuring wind speed when you are staring into the depths of Mordor!  Speaks volumes about the leadership and confidence inspired by the guides.  Great experience all around.

Mt. Rainier: August 24th Summit!

They spent a short amount of time on top before starting their descent from the crater rim just after 8 a.m. The teams will return to Camp Muir and then continue their descent to Paradise. We look forward to seeing them at Rainier BaseCamp later this afternoon. Congratulations to today's teams!
