RMI Guide JJ Justman Notches his 200th Summit of Mt. Rainier!

RMI Guide JJ Justman reached the summit of Mt. Rainier on Wednesday, June 4th, 2013, marking his 200th summit of the mountain. JJ has been a mountain guide for eighteen years, leading climbers on climbs and expeditions around the world, from Mt. Rainier to Alaska to the Andes to the Himalaya, including Mt. Everest. "People often ask me how I can climb Rainier day in and day out year after year, if it ever gets old? And my answer is always the same. No," said Justman. "I climb Rainier to share the experience with first time climbers. I see the emotion on people's faces as they come down from the mountain as they say, "I can't believe I did that"! And now with 200 summits I have seen and heard that a lot from hundreds of people. And it never gets old. I look forward to sharing the unforgettable experience with many others as I climb towards 300!" Below is a compilation of photos from JJ's climbs over the years. We wish JJ a big congratulations and many more safe climbs to come! - The RMI Team Collection of JJ's Rainier Photos over the years

YAY JJ! That’s awesome! I was on your rope with you when you completed your 175th in 2011, it was such a great time that I am coming to do it again next week.  You’re a kickass guide!  -Andy R

Mt. Rainier: Expedition Skills Seminar Begins

Our team met this morning for our six day Mt. Rainier program. It was the first day of orientation for our Expedition Skills Seminar - Muir. We spent the day ensuring we had all the right equipment and could pack efficiently. In the afternoon we grabbed our harnesses, boots, ice tools and crampons and spent time on the climbing walls at Rainier BaseCamp. Just because we are not on the mountain doesn't mean we can't have fun. Stay tuned as our team ventures on the mountain starting tomorrow! RMI Guide JJ Justman

Mt. Rainier: Muir Seminar Completes Their Training on the Mountain

The Expedition Skills Seminar – Muir led by Casey Grom and JJ Justman were able to safely climb to the top of Cathedral Gap this morning. They had clear weather, sunshine and no wind. The team had experienced winter-like conditions this week at Camp Muir but had a lot of fun training at 10,000 feet.

Mt. Rainier: Seminar Trains at Camp Muir

The Expedition Skills Seminar team awoke at Muir with sunny skies. We spent the day training outside going over basic climbing skills. Later this afternoon the weather rolled in and we retreated back into the comfort of our bunkhouse. There we continued training where the team safely learned self rescue out of a crevasse. Tonight we will enjoy dinner, lecture on high altitude medicine and tell some tall tales along the way. RMI Guide JJ Justman

Mt. Rainier: Expedition Skills Seminar Reaches Camp Muir

It's winter!!! Maybe I'm a little too excited but we made it to Camp Muir and the entire team is doing great. We endured the wind, rain and snow allowing everyone to learn the number one expedition skill...how to take care of ourselves in foul weather. We are busy sipping hot chocolate and there's a mug with my name on it! RMI Guide JJ Justman

Mt. Rainier: May 25, 2013 - Update

Hi everyone! The team today awoke to conditions that are not ideal to climb in. With all the new snow it just has not settled enough to allow safe climbing. So to enjoy and have a full mountain experience the team went up to Muir Peak to watch the sun rise. It's my favorite part of climbing. The photos simply do not do it justice. We are safe and we are happy and we are still laughing and having fun! RMI Guide JJ Justman & Team

Mt. Rainier: May 20th Update

At 7:57 a.m. RMI Guides JJ Justman and Jake Beren were standing on Columbia Crest, the highest point on Mt. Rainier, enjoying the views. There was a gentle 5 mph breeze on the “prettiest day in May that [JJ and Jake] have ever seen.” The teams began their descent about 8:30 and we look forward to seeing them at Rainier Basecamp this afternoon. Congratulations Summit Climbers!

Mt. Rainier: The Ascending Summit Climb Enjoys Blue Skies to Muir

It's quite a bit different than my last climb three days ago. Instead of bitter cold walking up to Camp Muir it was scorching hot!! The team did great and we are rehydrating and getting ready for our summit bid. Stay tuned and see how well our climb goes!! RMI Guide JJ Justman

Mt. Rainier: 2013 Climbing Season is Underway!

Well, yesterday the first climb of the season had to grit its teeth in high winds and low visibility. Low and behold, the team did great making it up to Camp Muir at 10,000 feet. Today the teams woke up to gorgeous weather and a view stretching well into Oregon. We will rest, relax and go for a little walk uphill to do some photo taking. The plan then will be to get ready for our summit tomorrow. RMI Guides JJ Justman & Brent Okita
