Introduction

Mexico’s El Pico de Orizaba (18,701 feet) is North America’s third highest mountain. Our “abbreviated” trip is ideal for the climber who is looking to complete the challenge of a 19,000 foot climb in a short period of time.

Orizaba involves hiking and climbing on moderately steep slopes that require participants to have prior knowledge of rope travel, the use of crampons, and ice axe arrest. A review of basic mountaineering techniques will be included in the program.

In Mexico City, we stay at a hotel located near the Constitutional Square, El Zocalo, in the heart of the city.

Our itinerary includes three days of acclimatization and training prior to the summit ascent. We spend one night at the base of La Malinche (14,636 feet), near Mexico’s high altitude Olympic training camp. Our afternoon acclimatization hike will be at elevations between 10,000 feet and 12,000 feet, and may include an ascent of La Malinche.
